2007-2008 Entrepreneurship Score Card Offers Insights for Entrepreneurial Growth in Michigan

Printed copies are available by calling the Small Business Association of Michigan at (800) 362-5461 or emailing sbam@sbam.org) This Score Card marks the fourth consecutive year that the Small Business Foundation of Michigan (SBFM) has provided sound and objective methodology and outcome measurements to highlight trends, correlations, relationships and opportunities as a guide to how the Michigan entrepreneurial economy stacks up relative to other states. Each year we have made improvements based on input received. Each year we have added new data, found more examples of efforts that foster entrepreneurship around the state, and found new audiences interested in the prospects of entrepreneurial growth. Most importantly, each year the core logic behind the Score Card and related SBFM messages becomes more relevant across the state – that the small business and entrepreneurial economy offers Michigan one of the best chances for economic turnaround. The Small Business Foundation of Michigan The Small Business Foundation of Michigan (SBFM) was formed in 1999 and is operated in connection with the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM). SBFM’s mission is to foster an Entrepreneurial Economy in Michigan. SBFM is an operating foundation that raises funds from grants, fees and donations and expends funds on Foundation directed projects aimed at stimulating robust entrepreneur change, vibrancy and culture.
Michigan Entrepreneurship Education Network (MEEN) -- A program of the Small Business Foundation of Michigan The Michigan Entrepreneurship Education Network (MEEN) was launched in 2002 to develop and enhance entrepreneurship education in Michigan. Funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), MEEN was a key component of MEDC’s strategic plan that emphasized the critical role of universities in Michigan’s future economic development efforts. Subsequent funding for MEEN has been provided by The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. MEEN is a program of the Small Business Foundation of Michigan (SBFM).
2007 Small Business Foundation of Michigan’s (SBFM) Entrepreneurial Score Card The 2007 Small Business Foundation of Michigan’s (SBFM) Entrepreneurial Score Card (http://www.sbam.org/download.php?id=588&file=1) finds that Michigan last year lost ground in developing new, high growth job-creating entrepreneurial small businesses. The Score Card gives Michigan a 2006 grade of “D-minus” for entrepreneurial dynamism, down from the 2005 “D” grade and edging closer to the failing “F” grade that Michigan received for 2004.
Moving Towards an Entrepreneurial Economy in Michigan The SBAM Entrepreneurial Development Center (EDC) works with entrepreneurs, public policy makers and stakeholders to remove barriers and foster a dynamic entrepreneurial economy. Our staff consults directly with entrepreneurs seeking to procure R&D grant funding for high-tech products. We also pursue sponsored funding (grants) to operate programs on behalf of entrepreneurs. Finally, we also work to improve the operation of key organizations that are important entrepreneurial dynamism.
Michigan Entrepreneurial Accelerator Partnership Program SBAM recently announced its support of a new endeavor by Ari-El Enterprises in southeast Michigan. Ari-El supports entrepreneurial companies through their Michigan Entrepreneurial Accelerator Partnership (MEAP).
