Calley: “They failed!”

August 1, 2025

Brian Calley, President & CEO of the Small Business Association of Michigan, issued the following statement after the Michigan Board of Canvassers deadlocked this afternoon on approving the 100-word summary for the “Invest in MI Kids” constitutional amendment to increase the income tax to 9.25% for certain filers. The tie vote allows the proposal to move forward with an unclear and inaccurate description of how the proposal will impact Michigan small businesses and taxpayers:

“Today, the State Board of Canvassers deadlocked on petition summary language surrounding the Invest in MI Kids ballot proposal allowing it to move forward. Two of the four Canvassers took the side of inaccuracy and misleading wording in an effort to rob taxpayers and deceive voters about the true intent and impact of the proposal. In short, this proposal will hit Michigan small business hard. It will cost jobs. It will reduce paychecks. It will damage Michigan’s economy. The Board of Canvassers had an opportunity to at least be straight with voters about these facts. They failed!”
