Michigan Treasury Offers Tax Relief for Businesses Impacted by March 2026 Severe Storms and Tornadoes

The Michigan Department of Treasury has announced state tax relief is available upon request for individuals and businesses impacted by the severe storms and tornadoes that struck southern Michigan in early March 2026.

On March 8, 2026, Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties following severe storms and four confirmed tornadoes that caused widespread damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. In response, Treasury is providing qualifying taxpayers in these counties the opportunity to request extensions on certain state tax filing and payment deadlines, with penalties and interest waived.

Who Is Eligible for Relief

Tax relief is available to individual and business taxpayers who:

  • Reside in Branch, Cass, or St. Joseph counties, and
  • Were affected by the March 2026 severe storms or tornadoes

This relief applies only to Michigan state tax obligations and does not extend to federal or city income tax deadlines.

What Relief Is Available

Eligible taxpayers may request additional time to file returns or make payments for certain state tax deadlines due on or before April 30, 2026. If relief is granted, Treasury will waive applicable penalties and interest as authorized under the notice. Taxes owed will still need to be paid by the approved extended deadline.

Affected deadlines include:
  • Individual income tax returns normally due April 15, 2026
  • Corporate income tax returns normally due April 30, 2026
  • Certain flow‑through entity returns normally due March 31, 2026
  • Monthly or quarterly sales and use tax returns due March 20 or April 20, 2026

Deadlines after April 30, 2026 are not covered under this notice.

Important: Relief Is Not Automatic

Taxpayers must request relief directly from the Michigan Department of Treasury. Requests can be submitted by phone, mail, or through Treasury’s e‑Services. Each request must include:

  • Taxpayer name and account number
  • A description of how the taxpayer was affected by the storm
  • A taxpayer address within the emergency area, or the address of a tax preparer located within the emergency area

Any relief granted will be implemented through the waiver of penalties and interest, as authorized under this notice. Taxes owed will still need to be paid once the extended deadline applies.
