Michigan Launches New Online Youth Employment Permit System

October 2, 2026

Michigan employers hiring minors will begin using a new online system for youth employment permits starting today, October 2.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has launched the Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP), a centralized online system designed to modernize the state’s youth employment permit process and make it more convenient and accessible for minors, families and employers.

With the launch of YEPP, employers and minors will now complete the youth employment permit process through one statewide online system. Local school districts and nonpublic schools will no longer issue youth employment permits.

What Michigan Employers Need to Know

The new system allows minors and employers to complete the permit process online at any time of day, providing more flexibility, particularly during summer months when schools may have limited hours.

Under the new process:

  • Employers are required to register with LEO before hiring minors.
  • Employers can notify LEO through the system when a minor’s employment ends.
  • LEO will have greater visibility into youth employment across Michigan.
  • The system creates opportunities for LEO to communicate youth worker rights and responsibilities directly with minors and employers.

For small business owners who employ or are considering hiring young workers, the launch represents an important change to Michigan’s youth employment permit process. Employers should familiarize themselves with the new requirements as the statewide system takes effect.

Additional information and updates about youth employment in Michigan are available through the Michigan Youth Employment webpage.
