Crain’s Detroit Business Senior Reporter David Eggert named SBAM’s 2025 Communicator of the Year

LANSING, MI – The Small Business Association of Michigan has named veteran reporter David Eggert as its 2025 Communicator of the Year. SBAM’s Communicator of the Year honor awards a reporter whose work has a significant impact on the small business community

“Dave is a fixture among the Capitol Press Corps where he is well-respected for his fair, balanced and detailed reporting,” said SBAM President and CEO Brian Calley. “His coverage of the Earned Sick Time Act is one of the many examples of his clear and concise reporting which make him an ally to the small business community and we are proud to name him Communicator of the Year.”

SBAM honored Eggert for his commitment to educating the public, especially Michigan’s small business community, on complex policy matters that directly impact their operations and livelihoods. His work throughout his reporting career has consistently assisted in the public’s understanding of economic and legislative issues through his clear and concise communication style. His timely, fact-based reporting gives context to the public and the small business community about a variety of impactful issues.

 “Throughout my career, educating the public on what’s going on in Lansing and throughout the state in a clear and understandable way has been my focus,” Eggert said. “I’m pleased that my work has been beneficial to small businesses and appreciate the recognition.”

Eggert has been with Crain’s Detroit Business for three years and has over 20 years of experience in journalism. He previously worked for Associated Press, MLive, and Lansing State Journal, among others.   

The award was presented to Eggert on June 17 during SBAM’s annual meeting in Lansing.
