An Introduction to Michigan’s New Expungement Laws

June 8, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

  • This event has passed.

Last October, Michigan passed a series of reforms to Michigan’s expungement (criminal record-sealing) process, including both an expansion of the traditional petition process and a new law that would automatically seal many low-level convictions.  On April 11, 2021, the expansion of the petition process went into effect, making hundreds of thousands of people in Michigan with old criminal convictions eligible to seal those records if they have remained crime-free for 5 years or more.

To help SBAM members and their employees better understand the new laws and the opportunities they create, SBAM is partnering with Safe & Just Michigan to present a webinar about the new laws at 12 PM on June 8th.  The webinar will feature a panel of experts, including Safe & Just Michigan’s Executive Director John Cooper, Policy Analyst Joshua B. Hoe, and Outreach Specialist Rick Speck discussing the new laws, the research behind them, how they may benefit SBAM members and their employees, and the legal resources that are available to assist people who may benefit from these reforms.

The panel presentation will be followed by time for Q&A.
