Question 1:

Would you SUPPORT reforms to the Earned Sick Time Act to exempt businesses with fewer than 50 employees? Please answer yes or no. You may provide an explanation if you so choose.

SBAM Policy Position: Earned Sick Time Act implementation has proven burdensome for many businesses, particularly those with small workforces or atypical schedules. SBAM supports reforming the Earned Sick Time Act to exempt businesses with fewer than 50 employees, similar to existing exemptions for the Family Medical Leave Act.

Jocelyn Benson (D)

All workers, regardless of the size of the business, deserve access to paid sick leave. I support reforms that reduce unnecessary burdens on small employers while preserving meaningful access to earned sick time for workers. I’m committed to working collaboratively with business owners and workers to strike a practical and balanced approach to future policymaking that reduces burdens while preserving access to earned sick time.

John James (R)

Yes. I support reforming Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act to exempt businesses with fewer than 50 employees. Small businesses are the backbone of Michigan’s economy, but they do not have the same administrative capacity, human resources departments, or financial resources as large corporations. Policies that may be manageable for large employers can create significant burdens for small businesses, family-owned companies, and job providers operating with lean workforces.
