SBAM Policy Position: Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Trust fund is 100% funded by employers through a payroll tax. The UI system exists to support individuals who find themselves unemployed through no fault of their own, but shortcomings in reporting requirements have caused some to exploit the system. 

I support efforts to strengthen accountability in Michigan’s unemployment insurance system while making sure it continues to serve workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. At the same time, I would make sure that businesses pay what they owe into the fund and do not wrongfully deny workers’ claims.

Yes. The unemployment insurance system should provide temporary assistance to individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own while maintaining accountability to the employers who fund it. I support reasonable reporting requirements and accountability measures that help prevent abuse, reduce fraud, and address issues such as “ghosting” while ensuring benefits remain available for those who genuinely need them.

Michigan should make it easier for people to return to work, not easier to remain disconnected from the workforce. My approach is simple: when it comes to workforce policy, we should reward work, support employers, and protect the integrity of the unemployment system for everyone.
