SBAM Policy Position: It is imperative to small businesses that they maintain autonomy over personnel decisions that affect their business, and the ability to hire and fire at-will employees.

I recognize there are valid concerns about ensuring workers are treated fairly and protected from unjust practices, which is why I’m open to legislation that requires just cause for termination of employees. As such proposals are considered, I’m committed to working with both small businesses and workers to find a thoughtful way forward that addresses the legitimate concerns that exist on both sides.

Business owners need the flexibility to build, manage, and, when necessary, adjust their workforce to meet the needs of their customers, employees, and business operations. Additional restrictions on at-will employment can increase costs, create uncertainty, and make it more difficult for employers to hire and grow.

I oppose new laws that further limit a business owner’s autonomy in hiring and firing decisions. Michigan should maintain a fair and predictable employment environment that protects workers while preserving the flexibility businesses need to create jobs, invest, and remain competitive.
