Help Shape Michigan’s Housing Future

August 3, 2026

Housing availability remains one of the most significant challenges facing Michigan’s small businesses. When employees cannot find affordable housing near where they work, it becomes harder for employers to attract and retain talent, limiting business growth, and economic opportunity. SBAM recognizes this connection and supports efforts to increase housing access across Michigan, including implementation of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s (MSHDA) Statewide Housing Plan.

MSHDA is currently gathering public input to help develop the next Statewide Housing Plan (SHP 2.0), a roadmap that will guide housing policy and investment across Michigan in the years ahead. As a small business owner, your perspective is critical. The housing challenges facing your employees, customers, and community directly affect your ability to grow and compete.

SBAM members are encouraged to take a few minutes to complete the Michigan Statewide Housing Survey and share their experiences, concerns, and ideas. Your feedback will help inform strategies to expand housing opportunities, support workforce development, and strengthen communities throughout the state.

MSHDA’s goal is to collect at least 5,000 responses, and every voice matters. Please consider taking the survey and sharing it with your employees, colleagues, friends, and family members. Together, we can help ensure Michigan’s housing future supports a thriving workforce and a strong small business economy.

SBAM’s housing policy supports increasing housing access to address workforce shortages and economic growth challenges and includes support for implementation of MSHDA’s Statewide Housing Plan, which aims to expand housing opportunities for Michigan residents and workers.  You can learn more by visiting SBAM’s Policy Positions.
