Line 5 Matters to Michigan’s Small Businesses

October 2, 2026

“This is a project that is a long time coming, with great need for us and our country. It’s important for our economy. It’s important for our national security.”

That was U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s message during a recent visit to Michigan, where he toured Enbridge’s Stockbridge terminal and met with energy industry leaders.

The visit reinforced something Michigan businesses already understand: reliable, affordable energy is essential to a strong economy.

Line 5 plays an important role in moving energy produced in Michigan – including oil produced by small and family-owned businesses in Northern Michigan – to refineries where it is processed into gasoline, jet fuel and petrochemicals used throughout Michigan and the region. Those products help power our farms, manufacturers, truckers, retailers and countless other small businesses.

Zeldin and EPA Great Lakes Region V Administrator Anne Vogel also highlighted the environmental benefits of the proposed Great Lakes Tunnel, which would move the pipeline out of the Straits of Mackinac and into a protected tunnel beneath the lakebed.

For Michigan, this is about more than a pipeline. It’s about protecting the Great Lakes while maintaining the reliable energy Michigan businesses and families need.

SBAM is proud to be a member of the Great Lakes Michigan Jobs Coalition supporting the Great Lakes Tunnel as a commonsense investment in energy reliability, jobs, economic opportunity and Great Lakes protection.
