Michigan Unemployment Will Soon Have a New Home: What Employers Need to Know Before Launch

October 21, 2025

Article written by SBAM’s Advocacy Team

Background:

Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) has been engaged in a multi-year modernization effort that will soon culminate in the launch of a new tool. This transition means that the state’s current computer system, MiWAM, is being replaced by a new one, called MiUI, which employers and claimants will use for all tax and benefit purposes.

Although this new system will not be available for claimants until Summer 2026, the December 15th, 2025 launch for employers and third-party administrators (TPAs) is quickly approaching. To prepare for launch, the Agency has released an informational website, MiUI University, where they post regular updates and resources for employers preparing to switch to the new system. The site is regularly updated with new information.

Prior to launch, UIA also announced a rollout schedule and key dates where current MiWAM functions will be discontinued. For many regular functions currently accomplished through MiWAM, employers may be required to use paper documentation or wait until the December 15 launch of the new system. Please make note of the following in the case they apply to your business.

For more information about MiUI visit the UIA’s “MiUI University” website.
