Finance for Non-Finance People

This course will introduce and explain the basic finance terms, concepts, and tools. Participants will explore how to speak the language of finance as well as read and understand the typical reports used by the finance and business leaders in the company.

This course will be held virtually on November 19, from 10:00am to 3:30pm. The course is limited to 12 grant participants.

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
• Define the purpose of the Income Statement, the Balance Sheet and the standard entries on these reports.
• Examine the critical nature of cash flow in the organization, and how it is often not well represented in the Income Statement and Balance Sheet.
• Compare and contrast the operation of privately held and publicly held companies, including the ways in which each is financed.
• Discuss the potential business impact that comes from investing in programs because of inflation, market conditions and overall risk.
• Identify methods and considerations associated with tracking the costs of employment (wage and salary costs, benefits costs, and indirect costs).
• Estimate the return on the investment made in programs and projects in terms that appeal to the CFO.

Participants can earn a Finance Fundamentals Micro-Certification through the American Society of Employers by attending this course and the following courses (Participants may also attend individual sessions for credit and not pursue the micro-certification.):
• Accounting Fundamentals on August 12 from 9:00am-12:30pm
• Budgeting Techniques on September 24 from 9:00am-12:30pm
• Financial Analysis and ROI on October 16 from 9:00am-12:30pm
• Finance for Non-Finance People on November 19 from 10:00am-3:30pm
