Health Insurance Rate Filings
SBAM’s Michelle Beebe joined the briefing to explain recently filed proposed health insurance rate increases for the small group and individual markets. The discussion focused on how rates are determined, factors driving costs, and strategies small business owners should consider as they prepare for renewal season.
Election Watch 2026
The race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat continues to draw attention as primary season approaches, while the gubernatorial field saw a significant shake-up with former Attorney General Mike Cox ending his campaign and endorsing Congressman John James. Recent polling also shows Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson maintaining a substantial lead in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.
The briefing also highlighted developments in Michigan’s highly competitive 7th Congressional District, including Senator Elissa Slotkin’s endorsement of Matt Maasdam in the Democratic primary.
Ballot Proposal Update
SBAM also discussed a proposed ballot initiative that would impose new restrictions on political spending by regulated utilities and certain government contractors. The measure has been recommended for certification by the Bureau of Elections and will next be considered by the State Board of Canvassers. SBAM expressed concerns about the proposal’s broad scope and potential impact on free speech, freedom of association, and advocacy efforts.
Leadership Transition in the Governor’s Office
The briefing concluded with an update on staffing changes in Governor Whitmer’s administration, including the transition of longtime Chief of Staff JoAnne Huls to a senior advisor role and the appointment of Zach Pohl as the Governor’s next Chief of Staff.
