June 8, 2026

Watch the replay!

The latest Small Business Briefing, hosted by Brian Calley and Jacob Manning delivered timely insights for Michigan’s business community. Here’s a recap of the most important topics discussed:

Jobs Report & Economic Outlook

  • The U.S. jobs report showed a strong gain of 172,000 jobs, exceeding expectations for the third consecutive month. However, this positive news led to a drop in the stock market, as investors had hoped for weaker numbers that might prompt the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. The likelihood of rate cuts this year has diminished, with inflation concerns – especially around energy costs – remaining high.
  • Not all industries are thriving; sectors like leisure and hospitality are seeing growth, while financial activities are lagging, partly due to advances in artificial intelligence.
Independent Contractor Rules
  • SBAM addressed ongoing changes to independent contractor regulations. The Department of Labor has proposed reverting to rules from the first Trump administration, but the process is not yet finalized. Public comment closed in April, and most businesses are operating as if the change has already occurred.
Gordie Howe Bridge Opening
  • The Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to open soon, pending final approval from the U.S. Department of State. This landmark project will have a major impact on cross-border trade and Michigan’s economy.
Michigan Election Updates
  • A proposal to change how candidates for Attorney General, Secretary of State, and university boards are selected failed to pass the legislature, meaning party conventions will continue to decide these nominations. The issue remains contentious and may resurface in future legislative sessions.
  • The U.S. Senate race saw a major development as the UAW endorsed Abdul Al Sayed, positioning him as the Democratic frontrunner. On the Republican side, Mike Rogers is the sole nominee.
  • The Republican gubernatorial field has narrowed to four candidates, with John James leading in polls. Jocelyn Benson is the Democratic frontrunner for Secretary of State.
Ballot Initiatives & Political Contributions
  • A new ballot initiative aims to restrict political contributions from regulated entities and government contractors. SBAM expressed concerns about its broad language and potential impact on small business advocacy, noting possible constitutional challenges.
SBAM Endorsement Process
  • SBAM will soon announce its first round of legislative endorsements, focusing on incumbents with strong pro-business records. The process is member-driven and intentionally bipartisan, supporting candidates who champion small business interests.
Workforce Trends & AI Impact
  • The briefing highlighted how artificial intelligence is accelerating changes in information services and finance, affecting employment patterns and prompting businesses to adopt a “wait and see” approach to hiring.
