In this week’s Small Business Briefing, Brian Calley and Sarah Miller welcomed new elite member Hard Rock Stone Works Corporation. The discussion centered on Governor Whitmer’s final State of the State address, with policy expert Jacob Manning providing analysis.
Governor Whitmer’s speech focused on three main areas: housing, literacy, and healthcare costs. On housing, she proposed a new state affordable housing tax credit, zoning reforms to ease multi-family development, and reduced construction requirements. Literacy initiatives aim to ensure every child reads, emphasizing early intervention, phonics, and support for struggling students. Healthcare cost proposals include capping medical debt interest, limiting credit reporting, and preventing foreclosures due to medical debt.
The team also discussed a major property tax reform proposal, which would cut property taxes and backfill revenue with a new sales/excise tax, though details are still pending. Updates on tariffs and independent contractor rules were shared, highlighting regulatory changes and uncertainties.
Economic data showed positive GDP growth despite flat payrolls, persistent inflation around 3%, and potential for rising energy prices due to Middle East disruptions. Upcoming SBAM events were announced, offering networking opportunities for small business owners.
