SBAM Policy Position: Michigan’s Workers’ Compensation system used to be among the costliest in the nation, but bipartisan reforms have made us a national model with predictable costs and fair outcomes.

Unfortunately, the Michigan’s Workers’ Compensation system is failing too many workers, especially those who have suffered workplace injuries. I support commonsense reforms to make these injured workers whole again, including by ending “phantom wages.” I’m committed to implementing these changes while maintaining a system that provides certainty for workers and employers alike.

Yes. Michigan’s workers’ compensation system should remain focused on providing fair and timely benefits to injured workers while maintaining predictable costs for employers. Reversing the bipartisan reforms that helped make Michigan more competitive would increase costs for job providers, discourage investment, and make it harder to create and retain jobs. We should continue to look for ways to improve the system, but we should not return to policies that made Michigan one of the most expensive states in the nation for workers’ compensation.
