The Small Business Briefing – October 26, 2026

October 26, 2026

With control of Congress and the Michigan Legislature in play, this election could have significant consequences for the state and its small businesses. On the Small Business Briefing, SBAM’s Brian Calley and Jacob Manning examined the campaign spending and key races that may determine what happens next.

Campaign spending spotlights the U.S. Senate race

The contest between Abdul Sayed and Mike Rogers has drawn exceptional attention and spending. Calley noted that Sayed’s campaign had raised more directly, while outside spending favored Rogers – a sign that both sides viewed the race as highly competitive. The speakers also observed that national attention on the Senate contest has overshadowed the governor’s race.

Legislative control may come down to a few seats

At the state level, Calley and Manning identified five Senate races and nine House races as the key contests to watch. They emphasized how close some districts have been: one House seat was decided by 79 votes in the previous election. The outcome will help determine which party sets the legislative agenda and which bills advance.

The speakers pointed to caucus spending as one way to identify priority races. Both parties invested heavily in several Senate districts, while late spending in the House largely focused on protecting Republican-held seats.

Why it matters to small businesses

State policy affects small businesses, and the lawmakers elected will influence which proposals receive attention and votes. SBAM encouraged viewers to review its election resources, learn about the candidates, and vote.
