Open Source Software For Your Small Business IT Needs

February 28, 2015

Michael Rogers, vice president of communications for the Small Business Association of Michigan, interviews Aaron Fuller, principal consultant and owner of Superior Data Strategies, about the use of open source software in small businesses. Fuller says that open source is software that is not only free of any licensing or maintenance fees, but its code is also completely available to its users. He believes open source software is a great thing, especially for small businesses. He says that the biggest misconception is that open source software is somehow less reliable or has less support, and recommends that to get started with open source software in your business, first get help from IT staff or a vendor with setting up what’s called a LAMP server. This is an acronym for Linux (operating system), Apache (web server), MySQL (database server) and PHP (programming language).
