Your insurance premiums are increasing

November 12, 2013

As a result of new taxes and fees that will help fund the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you will see an increase in the total premium amount for your employer-sponsored insurance plan on your January 2014 invoice. These taxes and fees include the following:

  • Comparative Effectiveness Fee
  • Federal Tax on Insurance Premiums
  • Reinsurance Fees
  • Marketplace Fee
  • Risk Adjustment Fee

These taxes and fees are in addition to the Michigan Claims Tax which is already included on your health insurance invoice and they will, unfortunately, increase your total premium on average between 4% – 6.5%.

For a detailed explanation of the taxes and fees, and to estimate what your company’s taxes and fees amount breaks down to be, please click here to visit the BCBSM website for a taxes and fees calculator

Please note that this is not a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan / Blue Care Network or a Small Business Association of Michigan decision to add these taxes and fees to your invoice… this is a requirement of the Affordable Care Act and all insurance carriers are required to pay these new taxes and fees beginning January 1, 2014.
